Training Course Review Training Courses Offered by Bariquins

Now that Covid restrictions have been lifted, it’s a good time for us to remind you of the training that Bariquins can offer your organisation.

We classify the training that we provide into two categories:

Bariatric Casualty Training

&

Bariatric Patient Training.

Our definitions for each classification centre around the circumstances in which the training will be useful for.

We categorise ‘Bariatric Casualty Training’ for the moving & handling of a person living with obesity in an emergency situation or a set of circumstances where patient lifting equipment cannot be used. This can be due to restricted access in the premises, where the casualty is in an outdoor environment or where the removal of the person is time-sensitive and such equipment cannot be provided in time. This type of training is usually undertaken by fire & rescue and ambulance services.

Our ‘Bariatric Patient Training’ courses centre around the training of moving & handling of a person living with obesity in a setting where the correct lifting and moving equipment is available. These type of courses are of interest to hospital and care home staff, as well as carers in the community.

Our training also encompasses different levels, starting from basic awareness and going all the way up to train-the-trainer instruction. Whichever Bariquins’ training course you undertake, you will receive knowledge on obesity-related issues as well as a significant amount of practical instruction.

Our Bariquins training courses are used to instruct on moving & handling or rescue techniques, depending on which you select. This knowledge is useful for reducing time when dealing with situations, for requiring fewer personnel attending, plus less injuries staff or their subjects. This can, in turn, lead to less employee sickness or the need to cover it and fewer compensation claims too. Bariquin training courses help improve the skills and knowledge of the class delegates, thereby reducing risks when handling a person living with obesity. This avoids the plus-size person feeling vulnerable, not having control and often, unintentionally, being made aware of the lack of training and experience of staff. Our training courses offer real-world expectations of dealing with people living with obesity, not make-do pretences that lead to underestimating the care required.

In this regular section, we look at news and other pieces of interest that have occurred since the last newsletter.

Headlines, reports and articles from around the world that have caught our attention recently are given below:

Once again, there have been headlines regarding the extrication of people living with obesity:

Fire crews moved a record number of overweight people in Britain last year, with nearly 2,300 incidents filed as shown here as well as here.

In one such incident in London, firefighters had to take down part of a wall in order to remove the occupant, as reported here.

A health survey finds that in the UK, obesity affects more than 1 in 4 people, as detailed here.

Another survey reveals that excess weight or obesity significantly boosts the risk of death by anywhere from 22% to 91%. The findings can be viewed here.

Moving overseas now.

From the US, there is a report that scant obesity training in medical school leaves doctors ill-prepared to help patients, as seen here.

And from Bangkok in the Philippines, there’s news that half the population there are now living with obesity. More about this here.
